Advanced Manufacturing Bootcamp©

The Manufacturing Skills Institute (MSI) Advanced Manufacturing Bootcamp© (AMB) is a coordinated process to deliver workforce education and training programs that: (1) measure and document core work ready skills; (2) measure and document manufacturing knowledge and competencies;  and (3) provide a practical “hands-on” manufacturing technology immersion experience.

The AMB serves as an “on-ramp” to careers in advanced manufacturing and ensures standardized curriculum for on-boarding individuals into more specialized hands-on technical training provided by community colleges and other institutions of higher education.

Aspects of AMB include:

Work Ready Foundations©Work Ready Foundations developed in partnership with the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) is a combination of lectures, demonstrations and applied laboratory exercises designed to foster learning.  The Foundations is comprised of modules that are presented in a sequence, which ensures foundational learning while offering opportunities to practice or observe the technology in the lab.  Partnerships with local industries will provide participants with industry exposure and expertise through visits to local manufacturers.  Industry visits will be combined with classroom visits from human resource staff and industry leaders who will discuss the traits, abilities and ethics required to be a successful employee in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.  Work Ready Foundations will provide a foundation for success in almost all manufacturing entry-level positions and a foundation for more advanced skill building.  Program completers will earn a Certificate of Program Completion based on written and practical exams as well as adherence to the standards of the program that will include meeting the attendance requirements for all workshops, observing safety regulations, and demonstrating daily the ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with other cohort members and instructors.

Manufacturing Technician Action Learning Lab ©The Manufacturing Technician Action Learning Lab delivered by Certified MT1 Trainers is a highly interactive training program based on core manufacturing skills and the techniques and interrelationships found in high performance manufacturing and production. Instruction focuses on the critical actions, STEM knowledge, systems, and processes necessary to participate in an advanced manufacturing enterprise. Activities include a focus on math and measurement; quality and continuous improvement practices; and, advanced manufacturing processes and controls. Participants develop high performance skills through demonstrations, lectures, self-paced studies, labs, technical presentations, use of proxy technology (i.e. mechatronics lab), critical thinking, problem solving, and individual/group activities in order to demonstrate the core set of skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in careers in advanced manufacturing.  Courses are taught by instructors with professional experiences in manufacturing to ensure knowledge and skills transfer from the classroom to manufacturing careers.  The Manufacturing Technician Level 1 (MT1) Assessment is used to certify Manufacturing Specialist (MS) and MT1 skills attainment upon completion of the Action Learning Lab.

Advanced Manufacturing Immersion Experience©:  The Advanced Manufacturing Immersion Experience is an intensive, hands-on training program at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, VA.  At the center of the Immersion Program is a “manufacturing project”.  Training participants, working in project team(s), actively engage in all stages of the manufacturing process from design, engineering, and manufacturing through production of the selected “manufacturing project”. The training includes exposure to a 5-axis CNC Machining Center, Water- and Laser- Jet Technology, Welding Simulation, Mechatronics and two (2) CAD/CAM computer labs within a cellular manufacturing environment. Cellular manufacturing is the model in which work stations and equipment are arranged in a sequence that supports a smooth flow of materials through the production process with minimal transport or delay.  The training is designed to:

  • Utilize a model based upon experiential and project-based learning styles shown through research to be most effective for adult learner;
  • Align skill development with national, industry-driven competency models;
  • Develop the STEM competencies that manufacturers need most and prepare participants to be workforce-ready in an expedited timeframe;
  • Provide an environment for individual assessment, continued learning, career advancement and preparation for industry and industry-related certifications for the Machinist, Welder, and Industrial Machinery Mechanic occupations; and,
  • Deliver immediate, formal feedback to participants to strengthen competency and generate participant confidence in their skills, abilities and the pursuit of employment, and future training and education.
