RICHMOND, VA– The Manufacturing Skill Institute (MSI), as part of the workforce division of the Virginia Manufacturers Association (VMA), announced today that it has received a contract with the Office of Apprenticeship (OA) within the Department of Labors’ (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) to function as an Industry Intermediary responsible for promoting and expanding multi-employer Registered Apprenticeship models in non-traditional industries and occupations across the U.S. MSI has also announced the formation of its Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) and intent to become an official Registered Apprenticeship sponsor. The goal is to enroll at least 750 new Registered Apprentices annually over four years through the MSI Academic and Workforce national partner network of 155 organizations, including connecting job seekers with employers within targeted industries. The MSI Academic and Workforce Partner network will have a special focus on industries in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, New York, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, and California. There will be a particular focus on growing Registered Apprenticeships in new industries and occupations. “MSI has successfully used its credentials and services, including the nationally acclaimed Manufacturing Technician 1 (MT1) credential, to promote skills attainment through apprenticeship training for the last 10 years, says MSI Executive Director, Dr. Victor Gray. “This announcement will also better enable us to expand career opportunities to underrepresented persons, the differently abled, women, minorities, veterans, incumbent workers, emerging workers, and other specific pools of untapped talent across the U.S.” MSI has also engaged Appteon, Inc., located in Reston, VA, a cyber and IT company, to help in strategically identifying and recruiting new apprenticeship sponsors. As an intermediary, MSI will engage industry and education leaders to encourage their participation in Apprenticeship Accelerator convenings and increase awareness of the advantages of Registered Apprenticeship models that train and prepare workers for careers in sectors and occupations with critical talent needs. “Trade associations can now utilize MSI to engage their membership with the right resources and assistance to expand or start Registered Apprenticeship Programs focused on closing the critical skills gaps in their workforce,” says Brett Vassey, President & CEO, Virginia Manufacturers Association. “The VMA will engage MSI and its team to reach 6,750 manufacturers and suppliers in Virginia alone.” For more information on Registered Apprenticeship and how to get your business involved, please visit https://manufacturingskillsinstitute.org/apprenticeship/. |
